- Interim management: £600–£2,000+ per day
- Non-executive / advisory appointment: By agreement
- Longer-term project: By quotation
- Fixed-price assignment: By quotation
These figures are indicative only. Highly specialised expertise, regulated professional work, unusual levels of responsibility or urgent assignments may command substantially different rates.
Mentoring
Commercial mentoring may be provided on an hourly, sessional or retained basis.
Indicative range: £50–£200 per hour.
Longer-term mentoring arrangements may be agreed at a monthly or project rate. Mentoring provided through designated ExEx Young People's Forum or Ideas Forum initiatives may be offered without charge where the Expertise Partner chooses to participate on that basis.
Sales Agency
Sales agency arrangements are normally based upon the commercial value of the opportunity rather than an hourly rate.
Possible arrangements include commission on sales generated, retainer plus commission, introduction fee, territory or agency agreement, fixed project fee or success-related payment.
Indicative sales commission: 5%–20% of qualifying sales or revenue, depending upon margins, level of involvement, length of the sales cycle and whether repeat business is included.
The precise basis upon which commission is earned and calculated must be agreed before the engagement commences.
Business Sale and Acquisition Support
Business sale assignments may involve preparation for sale, valuation assistance, identifying potential purchasers, introductions, negotiation support and transaction coordination.
- Initial advisory work: £100–£300+ per hour
- Project or preparation fee: By agreement
- Success fee: Normally agreed as a percentage of the completed transaction value
Where a success fee applies, the percentage and precisely what constitutes a successful transaction will be agreed before work commences. Professional services requiring regulated legal, accounting, financial or other specialist advice will be undertaken by appropriately qualified third parties where necessary.
Travel, Expenses and Location
Unless included within the agreed rate, reasonable travel and other expenses necessarily incurred in completing an assignment may be charged separately. All significant expenses should be agreed with the Client in advance.
Rates may differ according to whether work is undertaken remotely or requires attendance at the Client's premises. Video consultations provide an opportunity for many shorter assignments to be undertaken economically without travel costs.
VAT and Tax
Rates quoted by Expertise Partners should make clear whether they include or exclude VAT, where applicable. Expertise Partners remain responsible for their own taxation, National Insurance, VAT and other statutory obligations appropriate to their circumstances.
Agreeing the Rate
Before an engagement begins, the Client and Expertise Partner will agree:
- The scope of the work
- The charging basis
- The agreed rate or fee
- Expected time commitment
- Deliverables or milestones where appropriate
- Expenses
- Payment arrangements
- Any success fee or commission
- Any applicable ExEx fees or commission
These terms will form part of the ExEx Engagement Agreement.
An Important Principle
ExEx provides a marketplace for expertise — it does not determine what an individual's expertise is worth.
The Indicative Schedule of Rates exists to provide a useful starting point for discussion. The final commercial arrangement should reflect the nature of the assignment, the experience of the Expertise Partner and the value being delivered to the Client.
