Society spends a lifetime developing expertise—and too often allows it to disappear from view.

Retirement, redundancy, caring responsibilities and changes in circumstance can remove highly capable people from conventional full-time employment. Their knowledge does not vanish. What often vanishes is a trusted, flexible route through which others can find and use it.

At the same time, organisations face skills shortages, succession risks, delayed projects and decisions that would benefit from experienced judgement. Smaller organisations may need senior capability but cannot justify a permanent appointment. Community groups may need specialist help they do not know how to source.

This is not simply a labour-market problem. It is lost productive capacity, lost knowledge transfer and lost opportunity for people who still want to contribute on terms that fit their lives.
