VCS 007 — Practical Expertise

Jane developed a fault on one of the power socket circuits in her bungalow. She struggled to find a local electrical contractor interested in such a small job, and the one electrician who did attend spent over an hour trying unsuccessfully to identify the fault before giving up, to his credit he made no charge.

A friend who had found a semi-retired decorator through ExEx suggested Jane try the platform.

She found Peter, a retired electrician with more than forty years' experience who still enjoyed occasional fault-finding work but no longer wanted the demands of running a contracting business.

Peter visited Jane, methodically tested the circuit and quickly traced the problem to a damaged cable concealed behind a kitchen unit. The repair was straightforward once the cause had been identified.

Peter earned some additional income doing work he still enjoyed, while Jane finally had her electrical problem resolved.

The ExEx Benefit

ExEx gave Jane access to practical expertise that might otherwise have been unavailable and allowed Peter to continue using skills accumulated over a lifetime, entirely on his own terms.

For Peter, retirement meant giving up the business — not the expertise.
