VCS 013 — Adopting New Technology

Greg owned a successful commercial printing business and recognised growing demand from his existing customers for 3D printing. He saw an opportunity to diversify but lacked the knowledge to invest confidently in unfamiliar technology.

Through ExEx, Greg engaged Helen, an experienced manufacturing consultant who had previously introduced 3D printing into an engineering business.

Helen assessed the potential market, recommended suitable equipment and software, developed an implementation plan and helped train Greg's staff.

The new service was introduced gradually and, within twelve months, had become a profitable addition to the business.

During the project Helen also identified a wider opportunity. Many businesses faced the same difficulty choosing and implementing 3D printing technology. She subsequently established relationships with equipment and materials suppliers, creating an additional role for herself as an independent sales agent and adviser.

ExEx Outcome: One ExEx engagement had created two opportunities: a new revenue stream for Greg and an entirely new business opportunity for Helen.
