VCS 010 — The First Step

Expertise should not disappear when a career ends — and lack of experience should not prevent a career from beginning.

Tom was 19 and looking for his first full-time job. He had completed his education, was bright, enthusiastic and willing to work, but repeatedly encountered the same problem: employers wanted experience he had not yet had the opportunity to acquire.

Through ExEx's no-charge First Opportunity Forum, Tom described himself, his interests and the type of work he hoped to find. He wasn't expected to produce an impressive CV — he didn't yet have one.

David, an Expertise Partner who had spent more than thirty years managing manufacturing businesses, saw Tom's profile and offered to help. They discussed what employers actually look for in someone starting work, worked through interview preparation and considered the types of businesses where Tom's interests might be useful.

David then noticed that a small engineering company using ExEx was looking for additional help. The owner was reluctant to advertise because previous recruitment exercises had produced hundreds of unsuitable applications.

An introduction was made.

Tom spent a day with the company, followed by a week's paid trial. At the end of it he was offered his first permanent job.

David received nothing financially for helping him. He hadn't expected to.

Tom had gained his first opportunity, the engineering company had found an enthusiastic young employee, and decades of experience had helped the next generation begin acquiring its own.

Sometimes the most valuable exchange of expertise is simply helping someone take their first step.
