VCS 011 — A Smooth Transition

For more than twenty years, Jo had worked as a mechanic for a Jaguar main dealer. He had always wanted to own his own business, but with a young family and financial commitments he had never felt able to take the risk of starting from scratch.

A substantial inheritance changed the equation. Through ExEx, Jo discovered that Harry was selling a small independent garage just ten miles from his home.

Harry and Jo got on extremely well. Harry wanted the business he had spent years building to continue in capable hands, while Jo saw the opportunity to fulfil a long-held ambition without facing all the uncertainty of a start-up.

They quickly agreed a deal. It also provided for the transfer under TUPE of Grant, the young mechanic and MOT tester who had worked with Harry for almost ten years. Grant was relieved that the business would continue and that his employment and experience would remain part of its future.

Leaving the Jaguar dealership also meant that Jo’s employer pension contributions stopped. The change prompted him to take professional financial advice and make his own arrangements for retirement provision as a business owner.

ExEx Outcome: Harry retired knowing his business was continuing; Jo became an entrepreneur; Grant’s job and experience were retained; and the transition prompted Jo to address the wider financial responsibilities that came with business ownership.
